The great thing about this is that you can

At first, I wondered about the dried gunk around the lid of some conditioners. Will that same build up be on my clothing? My sensors in my HE? Then I remembered that I wash my hair with this at times, which to me is more valuable than my clothing. It's the lack of water that makes the gunk and since, you will be washing your clothing and your hair--build up shouldn't be a problem and if so, drum roll please as nature rolls out her red carpet....<br />

simply add 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar to the rinse
cycle in you washer or the wash cycle or both or your DIY conditioning hair rinse. It will soften your clothes and remove static cling just
like store bought fabric softener. It cleans the washing machine. People rinse their hair with vinegar in the shower--it will be alright :) The vinegar smell washes completely away,
however, obviously with this version you wont get a flowery or fruity smell like
you would with the conditioner added.<br />

Fels Naptha: $1.12 for a 5.5 oz bar. The recipes says use a 2/3 of a bar. I calculated 4 oz. just to make the math a little easier. The cost of the Fels Naptha per batch is: .80 cents per 5 gal bucket<br />

Washing Soda: $3.24 for a 55 oz. box. This is .06 cents an ounce. I weighed a cup of the washing soda (8 .4oz). I then multiplied the 8 .4 oz. by my per oz. price= .06 X 8.4 oz This comes to .50 cents per 5 gal bucket<br />

Borax (your optical brightener & deodorizer): $3.38 for a 76 oz box. This was .04 cents an oz. A cup of borax weighed 7 oz. Multiply 7 oz. by .04 oz for this recipe of a 5 gal bucket. This totals .28 cents for a 5 gal bucket<br />

Convenience and cost may cause you to make your own WASHING SODA (I used to buy it at pool supply stores and it was expensive!) Just bake baking soda for 45 to 60 minutes on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees until it changes consistency. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate and washing soda is sodium carbonate. The baking it causes a molecular change as it loses a carbon atom. If you don't want to do the science experiment and cannot find Arm & hammer washing soda locally, buy it online. It's cheaper to bake n make ;)<br />

Borax is a naturally occuring mineral :Sodium Borate. It is a laundry whitener and deodorizer. You should be able to find it in th laundry isle at WalMart.<br />

Essential oils can be added for increased expense and fragrance. One ounce of oil should be added to your 5 gal bucket. Prices vary there but you should buy it in a dark colored bottle to ensure quality oil.<br />

We have a great time discussing all things home and family management--which is a real motivator! Here is our going small recipe and our larger recipe. It's easy and fulfilling to do!<br />

I use hand grating and food processors to grate the soap with or without friends close by. Here is a great low sudsing powder laundry soap safe for even the HE washers:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #990000;">1 bar Fels Naptha soap grated like cheese<br />2 c borax<br />2 c washing soda <br />1/2 c baking
soda<br />1 c oxyclean or oxygen laundry additive</span><br />

<span style="color: #990000;">Grate your soap--</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;">Mix all dry ingredients with a whisk--</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;">Add your essential oil if desired--</span><br />
<span style="color: #990000;">Store in an airtight container--</span><br />
<br />
Because these are natural products, you will want to press them through a screen seive to avoid putting clumps into the wash once they have sat in storage for a long time. Use the coffee scoop to measure and coffee can for storage of your powdered laundry soap. Here is the direction for how much to use:<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #660000;">Use a coffee measuring spoon, 1 slightly rounded scoop for a small load, 2
scoops for a large load. If you are washing really dirty clothes, add up to 1/2
extra scoop.</span><br />
